How Many Cookbooks Do You Have?   Leave a comment

These days with the internet we can find recipes for anything anytime with a click or two.

Just like with a cookbook an addition or submission and the idea can become your own special dish.

I have several cookbooks.  Most are old handed down from my grandmother.  Some of the old recipes I don’t find anywhere else.  I suppose if I looked harder I would find them on the net.

One of my favorite books comes from Rodale Press. You my know Organic Gardening magazine and other health and wellness magazines .

This is more than a cookbook.  Called Stocking   Up.  Recipes, how to can, preserving meat, smoking. and just all kinds of information.   It will take you back in time.

Actually today is the  anniversary the first known cookbook wrote and published by an American.  Amelia Simmons had her book published in 1796. She lived in  Hartford, Connecticut.  It is called American Cookery.

The full title of this book was American Cookery, or the art of dressing viands, fish, poultry, and vegetables, and the best modes of making pastes, puffs, pies, tarts, puddings, custards, and preserves, and all kinds of cakes, from the imperial plum to plain cake: Adapted to this country, and all grades of life.

The word viands means an item of food or a very choice or delicious dish. Sounds delicious.

There are only a couple first additions left to be found but  reprints are out there to be found.

Have you ever been strolling through  the mall and passed an Orange Julius Shop?  If you haven’t you really should stop in and try one.  Delicious.

Back when I was going to Hospital Corps School in the Navy we visited a mall in North Chicago. This is where I first encountered the Orange Julius.

They are easy enough to make at home too.  All you need is a blender.

Add Champagne for your New Years Brunch.

6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate    ( Or use 1 and 3/4 cups fresh and leave out the water)
1 cup milk
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tbsp. malted power ( add to taste or omit)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
8-9 ice cubes

1. Combine all ingredients in blender.
2. Blend for  1-2 minutes  Add ice cubes one at a time until slushy.

Fresh orange juice is even better. Squeeze your own.

Honey instead of sugar is a good idea too. Honey is a little sweeter than sugar so you may use a little less.  Take advantage of the health benefits of honey.

Happy New Year or any Champagne Brunch.
