We have been enjoying honey ever since we began walking upright and likely before.
The first time we find mention of it in history is from Sumerian literature. 2100 B.C.
The only food that will not spoil, a jar was found in an Egyptian tomb and it was still as the bees made it. Honey will crystallize but a little warmth and it comes right back to normal.
There are several different types depending on the pollen collected by the bees. I believe I see clover and orange the most.
Here in my area we have a large fruit industry and bees play an important role. I find it fresh from the bee keeper. There are also different grades. Get the best. Look for the A rating in your market and 100% pure.
We also have the wax. Of course mainly used by the bees we use it in many ways. Besides candles you will find bees-wax in skin care products, petroleum, hair products and the good old mustache wax. The wax is non-allergenic and has a mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant quality. Used as a coating on cheese and other foods as protection during ageing. If you see E901 as an ingredient it has bees-wax in it.
Sweeter than sugar it takes less to sweeten. Exchange it for sugar is some of your favorite recipes, especially when baking, and see what you think. Generally 1 cup honey will replace 1 1/4 cups of sugar. Also containing water you may want to adjust the liquid.
Sugar also converts to fat easier. Sugar is a little lower in calories but because you use less this equalizes out.
Honey has also been used as an anti-bacterial ointment throughout history. Placed over wounds and burns to stop infection and promote healing. There have been several clinical studies done and it has been determined honey works better than our modern creams and ointments. Amazing. (100% pure)
The properties of a bee sting have also been shown to help with pain.
A serous wound should be looked at by your doctor. It is not recommended to give to babies under one year of age.
Bees are in trouble today. The planet would be a sad place without them. There are already places where the bees have disappeared because of pesticides and pollution. We would lose our fruit and vegetables. Be Nice to the bees!
There is nothing more troublesome than an ear ache especially when experienced by a child.
When they are small and can’t tell you it hurts a child will be pulling at their ear. This is how I experienced it when my two children were toddlers. We lived op at 6,000 ft. and I do believe the trip up and down the mountain, with the change in air pressure, bothered their ears.
There are many reasons for ear ache, some can be serous and others not so much. Just getting water in the ear from the shower or bath can be the cause.
Inflammation is the outer or inner ear have different causes and a visit to the doctor is warranted especially if accompanied by a fever or loss of balance. Pain in the ear can also be a symptom of some other conditions far away from the ear.
My children were experiencing this problem often and trips to the doctor and a prescription for an anti-biotic can be costly. I never allowed them them to suffer so we made the trip.
I was talking to a group of ladies one day at school. I brought up the subject and one of them gave me some great information. I have used and shared this option ever since and it works on children and adults.
Hydrogen Peroxide and Isopropyl Alcohol. I take the peroxide and fill the cap. Then add a few drops of alcohol to it. Then take a cotton swab and dip into the mixture. Tilting the head squeeze the liquid so it drips into the ear canal. The bubbles from the hydrogen peroxide will tickle a bit.
The hydrogen peroxide will work on any inflammation and also soften ear wax. The alcohol will help dissipate any water in the ear. This works great on an ear ache and the results are almost immediate.
If you are having problems with wax build up I discovered a system at my natural store. It is called an Ear Candle. It is a small tube and a candle. Protecting yourself from dripping hot wax you insert the tube into the ear canal and light the candle. You maybe surprised at all the dirt that accumulates in the ear.
Remember ear wax is very important to your hearing. It is the lubricant that keeps your ear drum healthy and working properly.
Allergy season is here and maybe a little early because of all the warm weather. The media has has been reporting on all the tree pollen covering the countryside.
We all know that troublesome Nettle Plant. It always seems to pop up out of no where and has all those tinny little pickers on it you can barely see. If you grab it without gloves you know what it is. Formic acid is found in the plant and this is the same stuff found in bee venom. The best way to remove the stinger is with a piece of duck tape.
The Nettle Plant has a long history as a herbal remedy. The plant contains several vitamins and minerals. It works great on inflammation. Those with joint ailments and also help for those suffering from diabetes.
I discovered its use as a tea last year for allergies. My grand nephew, he was 6, was suffering with allergies and so miserable. The little guy would wake up in the morning with crusty eyes and having a hard time breathing. It was so sad watching him suffer. I was in a natural store and mentioned allergies to the associate. She brought Nettle Tea to my attention. Found as loose tea and already in bags I purchased some. We found it really works as its history suggest.
Even though my grand nephew is a brute, I’m sure he will become a football star, he still was only 6. The amount to give him was questionable. We brewed up a cup and gave him a couple small sips. This really helped. Amazing! Nettle can also act as alaxative. You will know if your drinking to much.
There are also some diuretic effects. Like a water pill.
Be sure to look into it before using.
A small cup in the morning maybe helpful for allergies.
You’ll find Nettle Tea in most Health Food Stores. Loose or already in bags. It’s inexpensive too.
ConsumerTipsReports.org deserves a bookmark. I visit them a couple time a month and check out whats new.
You will find news and tips on everything from taking control of your cash to work from home and small business tips. I’m always looking at the health section.
There are 30 some different category’s about all kind of products and services. Saving money on the kids and pets.
I believe you will find this interesting and before you commit to a product or serves see what they have to say.
This morning I was checking out what they have to say about Accident Insurance Fraud. The ways people will commit fraud to scam insurance companies is crazy. Cause an accent on purpose and steal you time and money too. We all have feelings about auto insurance and the cost but when something happens we are sure glad we have it.
In my home state of Michigan we have No Fault. No fault seems to be more expensive. I do believe the benefits the insurance companies more than the consumer. In the neighboring state on Indiana they do not operate this way and insurance is muck cheaper. I do believe the person at fault should pay the bill.
Elevators and Escalators are the norm theses days. Stairs? When was the last time you opted to walk the stairs?
I would take a guess and say the most famous stairway is in Philadelphia at the east entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The “Rocky” movie of course. There are 72 steps found is this stairway. Thousands of people visit the steps each year just to do what Rocky did. Run up the steps and raise their arms in victory. Hopefully they go inside and visit the museum too.
I see athletes running the stairs all the time to help them get and keep in shape. I doubt if there is a better workout for your legs and cardiovascular system. Almost every time I see a piece on a running back for the NFL they are running the steps.
Exercise companies have certainly jumped on the band wagon. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t see an ad for a stair stepper on TV. Every gym and fitness facility has them available to their clients.
Walking is a great low impact form of exercise and adding a few steps up the stairs can burn a few more calories and increase blood flow. Walking, running and bicycling are all weight-bearing forms of exercise. The impact of walking is much lower and adding a leisurely walk up the steps can have it’s benefits.
Add the steps to your visit to the mall. Over time your choice may make a difference in your well being.
Walking can benefit all of us including those suffering with pain. How about putting you in a better mood for starters. Lowering you blood pressure and at the same time increasing blood flow. Strengthening muscles in your back and legs. Because walking is weight-bearing it adds to the strengthening of your bones and the health of joints. Also lowering the risk of blood clots.
I found this video on You Tube. From a mall in Stockholm, Sweden. They noticed people were ignoring the stairway and only taking the escalator. Engineers put together a plan to get people to use them. Now the escalator is ignored.
Forget The Pain And South Bend Pain Management on Acetaminophen.
The most dangerous oral pain medication available. Latest recall on February 17, 2012. Certain lots of Infants’ TYLENOL® .
Be aware of the warnings.
More people experience liver damage from this NSAID more than any other.
Acetaminophen is an other member of the Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug family of medications. There are several brand names and found in pill. capsule, and liquid forms. Even suppositories. Formulated for adults, infants, and children. A pain reliever and fever reducer.
I stopped using the medication years ago when the first reports of stroke began to surface.
Also called Paracetamol the first form of the drug goes all the way back to 1886. The drug was reformulated several times finally becoming what we know it as today. First being released in the United States in 1953.
Because it is found in so many different applications and we, as consumers, are not paying attention to labeling and dosage recommendations overdose and organ damage has become a problem. On January 13, 2011 the FDA reduced it’s dosage recommendations.
May 22, 2009 – emergency room visits, 26000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths related to acetaminophen.
Liver damage has become a major concern and the warning has been added to the label. People with heart problems are warned not to use the drug.
The older generation is at higher risk. Widely used for arthritis pain.
We have become complacent with the drug because it is so readily available. Please read the labeling and warnings if you decide to use the medication.
Be safe and consider our alternative for pain relief.
Warm weather has arrived early this year and everyone here in Michiana is getting outside. I went fishing yesterday and so many fisherman are trying their luck we had a hard time finding bait. The fish are biting. We caught thirty-four Blue Gills in about two hours. The fish fry will be this weekend. The only thing I like better than catching them is eating them.
I did get some sun but, luckily, sunburn was not a problem.
One of the problem spots for me has always been my forehead especially on the first time of the year out in the sunshine. A hat is always a good idea. A lighter colored, well ventilated hat, with a brim is a good idea to keep the sun off your head and face. I have had my scalp sunburned many times. Itches and peals like crazy. Now that’s what I call dandruff.
Not only the shin, protect your eyes too.
Sunscreen is highly recommended theses days. The rise in the incidents of shin cancer has these products in the news. In 2011 the FDA issued new rules on labeling for these products. Waterproof, prevents skin cancer, and some other claims are no longer permitted. Their effectiveness and safety are still in question.
Sunscreen was first formulated for the members of our military.
Being a member of the United States Navy Hospital Corps I recall a young man who, on liberty. got himself sunburned and was suffering from sun poising. He was experiencing nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache and, in general, feeling pretty sick. In the military you can get in trouble for getting sun burned on your own time, at least in my day. It’s called malingering. He was in the hospital for all most a week.
Sun poisoning or sun stroke, heat exhaustion or heat stroke should be a consideration when out in the sun. The effects are dangerous. Keep fluids on hand and of course water is best. Alcohol can quicken the effects of dehydration.
You may think having a tan will help from getting burned. This is not necessarily true. Going to Cancun MX, some time ago I figured getting a tan first may help. 28 tanning sessions and I still became burnt.
Protect your feet. Having burned feet is not a good thing. I know from personal experience. When you can barely get socks on and can’t get shoes on at all is a tough situation. I certainly wanted to forget the pain of that situation as soon as possible.
Keeping covered is the safest, but maybe not the easiest, way to protect your self. I know it’s hard when your having fun outside. Alternating back and forth from time to time is a good idea.
Aloe Vera has been used for thousands of years for burns and conditioning the skin. Found in many products. Having the Aloe Vera plant on hand and using the gel from the leaves is best. Pick an Aloe Vera without alcohol or fragrance in it.
My mother would give us a vinegar bath when I was a youngster. I recall this worked well but you had to go around smelling like a pickle for the rest of the day.

Acetylsalicylic Acid. Commonly referred to as aspirin. Aspirin is the trademark of the Bayer Corporation for Acetylsalicylic Acid. An other NSAID, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
Used as a pain reliever, fever reducer, and anti-inflammatory medication. Also used as a blood thinner. The active ingredient, salicylic acid, has been used through out history being found in willow tree bark. People have chewed on the bark, made tea, and used it as poultice since time began.
The old joke on Doctors for many years was ”Take two aspirin and call me in the morning,” The humor has left the building .
Considered by many to be one of the safer NSAIDs there are still serous complications to be taken into account when using the drug. Mainly due to the effects on the stomach, gastrointestinal track, and bleeding. Acetylsalicylic Acid hampers the blood’s clotting ability. Those dealing with diabetes, even mild cases, are suggested to consult with their doctor about it’s use.
In recent years a low dose of the drug has been recommend to heart attack and stroke victims. Also those who show risk factors of same. This is due to the blood thinning properties. Never start a daily regiment of this drug with out first consulting your doctor.
The drug has been associated with Reye’s syndrome and is not recommended for children, under the age of 18, showing symptoms or chicken pox or flu. During my generation this was the “go to drug” for fever. Times change.
The drug is not recommend if you have allergies or asthma. Ulcers or any bleeding disorder. Liver or kidney disease. Any blood clotting problems. If you suffer with Gout.
Kind of an oxymoron there is risk of heart attack and stroke with this NSAD. Because of it’s ability to loosen clotting that may be present in the body. These particles can travel to the heart and brain causing a blockage in blood flow leading to heart attack and stroke.
As with any NSAID never combine them with alcohol.
How often do we “pop” a pill never paying attention to the label? Just because they are on the shelf and readily available doesn’t mean they are safe for everyone. It’s time we all started paying attention to labeling and warnings on the packaging before we buy let alone put it in our bodies.
I invite you to join our community of people keeping up on the news about oral pain killers.
Although not applicable for fever our topical pain relief lotion should be a consideration for pain relief. No dangerous side effects. Works in minutes. Smells like peaches. Trying is believing.
We have moved the clocks forward and here in Michigan the state bird has arrived. When the Robin shows up we know its spring.
One of my favorite meals for spring days is White Clam Sauce over Pasta. Delicious.
You can find Clam Sauce on the shelf at your local market. It comes in red also. I like the white best. Good right from the can, you can dress it up some but its easy to make home-made.
Clams are good for you. More iron than beef and contain the omega-3 fatty acids we all hear about. Heart Healthy! The same protein and fat with much higher amounts of most vitamins and minerals as chicken. Clams do contain some cholesterol but because of the saturated-fat content its a lot better for you than a burger and fries. There are no warnings about clams for people with high cholesterol.
An over indulgence in shell-fish is not recommended for arthritis and gout sufferers because a build up of uric acid can occur. Moderation.
White Wine. Although Red is better for our health because the shin is part of the wine making process ( the skin is were all the flavonoids are) you can get the health benefits from wine with the white.
Onions or Shallots and Garlic. Always good for you and your plumbing. The only bad thing about them may be your breath. They help lower blood pressure and hinder tumors. They also reduce cholesterol. There is a warning for those taking blood thinners about garlic. Excessive us of garlic can act as a blood thinner.
Garlic is said to be one of the oldest cultivated plants of civilized man.
Add Mushrooms. There are so many types in the market today. Find your favorite. Their earthy, meaty flavor fits in many dishes or just by themselves.
Mushrooms have been used for medicinal purposes throughout history besides being good to eat. They are very low in calories and a fat-free food. A big plus for women there is an aspect there that helps fight breast cancer.
Use Red Pepper. Black pepper, which I love, Is very “woody”. Your body can’t even digest it. Red pepper, however, is very healthy for you heart and circulation. Cayenne pepper is great for your blood pressure, stomach and the intestinal tract. There is evidence a glass of warm water with cayenne pepper in it can stop a heart attack and diminish rheumatism.
Pasta. Whole wheat pasta is considered better for you. I tried it and it didn’t work for me. The one made with alfalfa is my choice. There are many others. Watch for the sugar content.
You will find recipes on the net for this sauce or try it off the shelf. You can always make it your own next time.
A healthy diet and some exercise can make a big difference in the way you feel and your tolerance for pain. Get the blood flowing. Laugh and enjoy your family and friends over a great meal.
We all know Ibuprofen. There are several brand names associated with this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Found as an over the counter pain reliever and fever reducer. There are higher dosages available by prescription.
Discovered in the 1960s Ibuprofen received a patent in 1961. Becoming available in England in 1969 and the United States in 1974 by prescription only. Not until 1984 was it made available as an over the counter medicine by the FDA.
Because of the anti-inflammatory properties the drugs have become popular with arthritis suffers. Other common uses include headache, toothaches, menstrual cramps, and, at times, acne. Over all any mild to moderate pain.
Also a vasodilator some negative side effectshave been associated with the drugs use especially with people afflicted with heart and circulatory problems.
Pay close attention to dosage recommendations. Always consult your Doctor on extended use.
Research has shown it not to be quite as effective as acetylsalicylic acid and the drugs effects wear of faster. Commonly know by it’s brand name “Aspirin” trade marked by the Bayer Corporation. One plus the drug is not as irritating to the stomach and intestinal tract.
Please take this warning to heart or liver if you will. Never take a medication with alcohol. It is a well known fact the liver is a stupid organ. The liver will always process alcohol first leaving the ingredients of a medication waiting it’s turn. Setting there it destroys liver cells. The liver is one organ that has the ability to rejuvenate it’s self but when the damage become to great there is no turning back.
Side Effects:
Nausea and Vomiting, Ulcers and bleeding, Elevation of Liver Enzymes (Liver Damage), Diarrhea, Constipation, Headache, Dizziness, Rash, Hearing Loss. Difficult or Slow Breathing. Renal Problems (Kidney Damage). Heart Attack and Stroke.
Long term use, over three months, has been linked with erectile dysfunction as have all NSAIDs.
Because Ibuprofen is found in so many over the counter medications people taking several meds at once have the potential of over dose. When treating the cold or flu pay attention to the ingredients. Over dose is possible.
When it comes to pain relief we have a safe and effective topical lotion without the dangerous side effects of NSAIDs.
